When I was about 8 my dad helped me make did a tape-recording of this song from our black and white TV, with my brother making noises in the background. I never wrote down the title and eventually the cassette wore out. For 30+ years this song and the intense pleasure I'd derived from certain specific passages was lost to me except that I could play some of it from memory when I picked up the piano. This was the first song I ever transcribed by ear, and it motivated me to learn basic piano chords just so I could fit them to the tune in a kind of instinctive arrangement of my own. It started me relying first and foremost on my ears, and relating first and foremost to the feeling a chord progression would give me which has never left me since. The internet arrived and at intervals of years I tried to find it, lacking any real references. Then today on christmas eve of 2013 I happened upon this "Tune-pal" app for finding Irish music. In about 5 seconds of downloading the app and playing the melody from memory on guitar, applying swirls and flurries where it seemed reasonable, Po'er Fanny resurfaced. I even instantly remembered the title again from that one mentioning in whatever cultural programme it originally came from, in those one-channel days My head is still spinning frankly and this version here is the one that best evoke my remembered feelings and desired harmonies for this song, so far. I did not know what major or minor was at the time but I sure as shit knew what it sounded like and what it meant. And I still crave that after all these years. Music will do shit like that to you.

BTW, I like the guitar version of this piece as arranged by Franco Morone. Look it up on YT as played by Dracapally using Morone's arrangement. She plays Part B only once through but I can tell you that second part, on guitar in any case, is a b*tch!!

Certainly anything written down as a score would have been by someone listening to the music. Carolan could not have written it down himself, obviously. CelticStrings version, whether it follows the original or not, is *evocative.* That was what Turloch O'Carolan was all about. His music evoked emotions. You don't hold up a wedding or a funeral for someone who's going to play a set piece, and a mediocre player at that. His compositions were magical. That's why he's a national treasure.

There is no official sheet music to this tune. Nobody even knows how Carolan tuned his harp. All we have are the supposed melody lines, in most cases brought forward by fiddlers and the occasional harpsichord/clavichord players. Bach did an arrangement of four of Carolan's pieces. Do you think his arrangements sounded anything like Carolan's? Also, do you think Carolan played his music the same way each and every time? I'd be willing to bet he did plenty of improvisation.
